Exercise 1: Handwriting

To find your learner status, write your full name on a piece of paper with your normal hand, and then write your full name with your other hand (your non-dominant hand).

  • Pay attention to how easily you can write the first signature and what effort it took to produce the second one.

Now turn the paper upside down (180 degrees) and try to write your name with your dominant hand. If you are having problems, try printing instead of handwriting.

When writing with your other hand or upside down, ask yourself: what does it feel like (frustrating, silly, fun)? How long does it take? Does it require concentration? How is this like learning or creating?

In a blog entry, reflect on your experience and your observations. In the future, use this exercise as a quick reminder of how it feels to learn or to take a different point of view.
